Reduce Your Risk Of Cancer Through Diet

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. In the UK alone, 359,960 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in 2015. 90-95% of all cancer cases are due to factors related to lifestyle. These factors include:

  • Smoking
  • Diet
  • Alcohol intake
  • Physical activity levels
  • Obesity
  • Sun exposure

Diet is a major contributor to the development of cancer. Studies have shown that deficiency of certain nutrients, and intake of others, can increase our risk of developing cancer.

For instance, studies have shown that individuals with higher intakes of dietary fibre, fish, calcium, vitamin D, have lower risk of developing colorectal cancer. Among smokers, those who consume fruit and vegetables more often, are less likely to develop lung cancer. In particular, intake of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts, have been associated with reduced risk of cancer.

On the other hand, those who consume a lot of red and processed meat, as well as those who drink a lot of alcoholic beverages, are at increased risk of developing cancer.

Some data also suggest that high intakes of dairy products, in particular milk, may increase the risk of prostate cancer.

There is also evidence to suggest that those who adhere to a vegetarian diet have lower risk of developing cancer. Multiple components of such a diet are likely to play a role at risk reduction including the higher intakes of fruit and vegetables and the lower intake of processed meat.

Being obese significantly increases risk of cancer in certain sites such as the colon and breast. As such through losing weight, one can reduce the risk of developing cancer.
