OBESITY

The combination of the 21st century sedentary lifestyle and consumption of high fat, high sugar convenience foods has had a significant impact on increasing obesity – a BMI (body mass index) greater than 30. Recent statistics estimate that around a quarter of people in the UK are classified obese, and these figures together with the serious health implications are raising increasing public concern.

Being overweight can deplete energy, and reduce self-confidence and self-esteem, leading to anxiety and depression. But more seriously, there are strong links between obesity and several medical conditions. Carrying excess weight increases the potential for osteoarthritis and exacerbates the symptoms of sufferers. The accumulation of fat can narrow the arteries, and increase the risks of heart disease and high blood pressure. It may also aggravate sleep apnoea and is thought to play a role in the production of gallstones.

Excess weight also stimulates the production of hormones – oestrogen and insulin, which increase the risks of certain cancers (e.g. breast and prostate), and is a significant contributing factor in diabetes type 2. However, making certain healthy lifestyle changes and losing weight can reap huge benefits for the sufferer.
